Fashion is big business. A small city in Germany ’s region of North Rhine-Westphalia is a major textile manufacturing location, where about 90% of silk ties on sale in Germany are produced. This is why the city is known as the city of velvet and silk. The real name is Krefeld. Krefeld organizes a yearly event termed the biggest street fashion show of the world (Größte Strassenmodenschau der Welt), which attracts thousands of visitors. AFRITOPIC attended the event.
Textile design and the production of textiles today are generally related to high technological processing. Textiles used for all sorts of applications including fashion design are produced en mass by the textile industry. Most of the indigenous local methods of creating textile design and producing textiles are no more in use, forgotten or only practiced by a very few group of people.
The first Miss Afrika Germany pageant contest took place at the high-class Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich, the city of German celebrities. This beauty contest, organized by the Nigerian duo-team, Ada Uduma and Frank Emina, is the second beauty contest organized by people of African descent this year. A Miss Black Germay 2003, organized by Pactricia Fouda took place in July. The combination of classic and modern architecture of the Hotel with harmonizing abstract paintings hanging on the walls provided a pleasant and cosy ambience. The guests really felt welcome. Yes, the guests, from different cultural backgrounds, added a colourful multicultural touch and positive waves to the event.
The African beauty, Tausi Likokola has graced the catwalk stages of international fashion shows, showcasing renowned designers’ labels. The hard-working model is also the initiator and president of the Tausi Aids Fund organization, which focuses on preventing the spread of HIV AIDS in Tanzania. But that is not all; the African role model is also the author of the book The Art of Beauty and Health, which is planned to be on the market soon. In an interview with Afritopic in September 2003, Tausi talked eloquently about her modelling career and her organization as published below.
The small German town, Krefeld, was turned to fashion Mecca for 2 days from 19th to 20th September 2009. Fashion houses ranging from Gerry Weber, SinnLeffers, and Esprit to Reebok and Nike presented their creations for the Autumn/Winter 2009/2010. Ladies have no reason to complain about lack of varieties. Different styles in diverse shades of colours are available to choose from. The trendy colours are Moroccan blue, black, slate grey, palace blue, atmosphere, burnt orange, gloxinia, moss, rattan, glazed ginger, ruby wine, fuchsia red, burnt olive, dark citron, vibrant green, lavender and salmon rose. The combination of colours and type of fabric seem to classify the general fashion trend into three categories; casual, classic and chic.
