As more and more cosmetic products are leaning towards an all-natural status, some products are even adding sweeteners to their labels to give the natural flavors and fragrances a boost. This is obviously most prevalent in the lip product area. The use of natural sweeteners as a replacement for conventional sugars such as sucrose, and synthetic sweeteners such as Sodium and Calcium Saccharin and Sucralose (Splenda®) is becoming more and more popular. The sugars we are talking about can either have 5 carbons (pentose) or 6 carbons (hexose) in their rings and can be either monosaccharides (one ring) or disaccharides (two rings).
