The e-book “Empirical Study of the Impact of Flextime Schedules on the Motivation of IT Employees at a German Firm” explains a study conducted before the outbreak of COVID-19, which forced many companies to adopt “home office” for their employees. Flextime schedules or arrangements, having originated in Germany, have been adopted and included in many organizations’ policies in many firms worldwide. The schedules have been extended and modified over the years in diverse organizations to comply with the needs of the organization implementing the flextime schedules. Research works have been conducted to investigate the implementation of flextime schedules in organizations, the effect of flextime schedules on work-family relations, the impact of incentives, including flextime, on employee motivation, and other related subjects. This empirical study investigates the impact of 5 types of flextime schedules on employee motivation from the employee perception.
The types of flextime schedules are “One day in the week home-office”, “One family day in the month”, “Career break in the year”, “Bonus vacation”, and “Free happy hour in the week”. They are the independent variables or predictors in this study and are defined as Employee Motivation Factors in the research model. The dependent variable or response is defined as Employee Motivation. The population from which samples are randomly selected is the employees at the IT department of a German technology firm. Questionnaires employing a 5-point Likert scale were used to collect data after ethical issues had been clarified and the consents of the sample employees had been secured.
Statistical analysis is conducted to ensure reliability and minimize external validity threats. The significance of each independent variable is determined by employing applicable and recognized hypothesis testing methods. The results of the study reveal that all independent variables are statistically significant but the variable “Career break in the year” is deemed to be the flextime schedule that will have a more positive impact on employee motivation than other variables. Accepting the result of this research, the management of the company has decided to look into the possibilities of implementing a new flextime policy “Career break in the year” across all departments.
